Hello and thank you for your interest in Pi Kappa Phi.
The University of Massachusetts chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is made up of a unique group of exceptional men. Our chapter stands out among the Greek organizations at the university as a group that strives for excellence in our programs and events as well as in our personal lives. Our chapter also stands out among all the chapters of Pi Kappa Phi nationally, winning numerous awards annually.
As we enter the 2008-09 school year, our vision is to continue to strengthen our bonds of brotherhood. We have won the prestigious title of "Fraternity of the Year" the past two years from the university, and we will continue our pursuit of that title in this coming year. To win such an honor, it is imperative that we seek out new, exceptional leaders from all sectors of the UMass Amherst community to join our group and learn about the joys and benefits of fraternity life.
What is brotherhood? Many confuse the media images of fraternity seen in movies like "Animal House" or "Old School" for the focus of all fraternities. Here, in Amherst, Pi Kappa Phi seeks to challenge this perception of fraternity life by providing all our brothers with opportunities to lead. Brotherhood in our chapter requires a dedication to becoming a better man in the following areas.
We provide new members with the tools to grow and join our brothers as Men of C.L.A.S.S. We feel that by becoming Men of C.L.A.S.S. our brothers will be better prepared to serve our chapter as active members and shoulder their full responsibility as citizens and contributing members of society as alumni.
I can tell you that my involvement with Pi Kappa Phi has changed my life. I joined the fraternity as a sophomore because I felt like I was not as active as I wanted to be. I was first attracted to the organization because I learned that Pi Kappa Phi is the only fraternity that operates its own national philanthropy, Push America. After joining, I took on many responsibilities and, with the help of my brothers, was able to accomplish many things that I would never have had the opportunity to achieve otherwise. For instance, I was able to create a charitable 5K Road Race that is now heading into its fourth year and raises over $5,000 annually for our national philanthropy.
Your interest in Pi Kappa Phi has introduced you to our guiding principles and just a few of the opportunities that fraternity can provide. The next step is to come on out to an event and meet the guys. Membership in a fraternity is a big decision and a serious commitment. I hope that you are willing to take a small chance and introduce yourself to us so that we can show you firsthand how Pi Kappa Phi has changed our lives for the better and how it can do the same for you.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at msloan@student.umass.edu.
Have a wonderful day and I hope to see you soon!
Sincerely yours,
Matthew Sloan
