Pi Kappa Phi Brother Matt Pearlson

Matt Pearlson, #001

Chemical Engineering, 2007, Boston, MA

Matthew served as the first President of the UMass-Associate Chapter and as the Historian on the Executive Council. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Commonwealth College. His interests are in alternative fuels and energy efficiency technologies. He was recognized with several awards for his academic achievements including a William Field award from the University, Outstanding Fraternity Scholar from the Office of Fraternities and Sororities, as well as nominations for the Rhodes and Barry Goldwater scholarships. Matthew moved to Seattle after graduation and worked on the Windows 7 project for the Microsoft Corporation. While there he began a successful career as an amateur endurance athlete and regularly trained and participated in triathlons and marathons. In August 2009, he moved back to Massachusetts to attend MIT where he is pursuing a dual masters in the Technology and Policy, and Mechanical Engineering Departments. He hopes reconnect with the chapter while continuing his education, and act as a resource for his younger brothers and fellow alumni. Looking toward the future, Matthew plans to pursue a multidisciplinary PhD focusing on global sustainability and secure a position helping government officials understand the technological and social impacts of energy technologies and policy.

Pi Kappa Phi Brother Diego Torres-Palma

Civil Engineering, 2007, Springfield, MA

Diego served as the Chartering President for the Theta Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi and served as the Vice President and Secretary for the UMass-Associate Chapter. He graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering. As an undergrad Diego served as a Teaching Assistant for Calculus and was a member of such organizations as UMass Golf, the American Society of Civil Engineers, Engineers Without Borders, Academic Honesty Board, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Diego was also nominated for the Senior Leadership Award established by the Alumni Association to recognize graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the campus. Diego moved back home to Springfield, MA after graduation and currently works as the BIM Manager for Daniel O’Connell’s Sons. Keeping his commitment to Push America, in May of 2008 Diego participated in Gear-Up-Florida and became a Pi-Alpha. Looking toward the future, Diego plans to pursue an MBA at either Boston University or Boston College.

Jake serves on the Interfraternal Council as Vice President of Communications. Outside the fraternity, he is a member of the UMass Minuteman Marching Band and previously worked on the Production Crew at the Mullins Center. Jake is a First Degree Mason and a member of the AF/AM Pacific Lodge in Amherst.

Matthew previously held the position of Push America Officer for the associate chapter and Community Service Chair. In his role as Push America Officer he helped to found the First Annual Eric’s 5K Road Race, one of the first 5K charity races organized on the UMass Amherst campus. His other activities include working as a Student Admissions Representative and tour guide at the university, as a research assistant in the Primate Research Laboratory performing cognitive and developmental studies, as a Resident Assistant in the Orchard Hill living area, and as the UMass campus campaign manager for the Teach For America organization. Currently, Matthew serves as the Chapter Secretary.

Phil served the Theta Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi as Vice President and President during his last two years as an undergraduate at UMass. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology and a Culture Health and Science Certificate. Before graduation, Phil pursued graduate studies in Public Health and plans to continue his education while serving his commitment as an Air Force Officer. He received his commission through ROTC with Detachment 370 based at the University. He is now stationed at Fort Meade, MD working with the 94th Intelligence Squadron. Upon graduation, Phil participated in the Journey of Hope in the Summer of 2008 with the South Team. Since then, he has participated in the Push America Challenge and continues to support Theta Mu and the greater fraternity through contact with executive members, donations, and participation in Push America events.

Kevin previously served on the Chapter Executive Board as Chaplian. He also works as an Apartment Living Advisor in North Residential Area. He is a volunteer in the Boltwood Project, is a member of the Commonwealth College, and is a Former President of the Residential Leadership Association (RLA). Kevin has recently begun participating in the fraternity’s Academic Program which encourages all members, active and associate, to reap the benefits of Pi Kapp’s extensive academic support infrastructure regardless of major or GPA.

Derrick serves on the chapter’s Push America Committee and has helped coordinate such events as ACCESSability and Eric’s Race. He has served on the Finance and Budget Committee and plays on several of our intramural teams, including softball, baseball, volleyball, and basketball. Outside the fraternity, Derrick is a member of the Finance Society and the Investment Club and is a Resident Assistant in Grayson Hall.

Kyle served as the chapter’s chartering Warden, and continues to serve on the New Member Education Committee. He is a member of Commonwealth College and a Citizen Scholar. Kyle does weekly service at the Amherst Survival Center. He is the founder of the Campus Underground Press, an alternative campus newspaper. Kyle spent last summer on the Pacific Ocean as part of a Semester At Sea program.

Michael Czabaj graduated in May of 2006 with a dual degree in Math and Econ. Outside the fraternity, he worked for the University Housing Office as a painter, carpenter and supervisor. Mike was a community leader within the the Thatcher-Lewis-Johnson cluster as well as a Resident Assistant in Lewis. He also served as the Vice President of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). While in NRHH, Mike represented the university as well as our fraternity across the country at regional and national conferences. Mike is currently working as a systems specialist for MassMutual Financial Group in Springfield, MA.

Matthew Schoenberg has been the Chapter Secretary since January, 2006. He is responsible for composing Chapter and Executive Board minutes, e-mail list serve maintenance, administrative reports, and membership reports with national headquarters. He is also working closely with the Push America Committee to plan our spring 5k Road Race. Matt is currently involved with the Homecoming Committee to plan Homecoming activities, as well as the Finance Society and Isenberg Honors Council. On top of all that, he works two jobs, one at the Undergraduate Admissions Office, and the second at Shutesbury Elementary School with the after school program.

Adam serves as the fraternity’s Treasurer. His responsibilities include overseeing the financial entities of the fraternity, from planning an event to collecting dues. He also oversees the Finance and Fundraising Committee. Outside the fraternity, Adam is an RA in John Adams Tower on a Psychology TAP floor. He is the Governor of Southwest Area Government and a House Council Area Government Committee Representative. Adam serves on the Coordinating Council for the SGA, is a Judicial Assistant in Coolidge Tower in Southwest, and is a member of the National Scholars Honor Society. Off campus, Adam is a certified Martial Art Instructor and trainer and Medical Assistant in a doctor’s office in New Hampshire.

Chris is a former Chief Justice and former Push America Executive. Outside the fraternity, he is working on a thesis and a capstone project. His thesis is on the philosophy of just societies and his capstone project is a guide to starting a solo-practice law office. He is an Intro to Logic tutor, and has been for seven semesters. Off campus, Chris is the business manager of a law practice in Northampton. He is also the cofounder of a program to provide free legal services to indigent victims of domestic violence, where his main role is the training of undergraduate students to work as interns for attorneys participating in the program.

TJ has served as the fraternity’s Publicity Chair. Along with designing and helping maintain this website, TJ is charged with supervising and approving all materials dispersed outside the fraternity. Any publication, flyer, t-shirt, or symbol you’ve ever seen from the Theta Mu Chapter has passed through TJ’s hands. Along with handling the fraternity’s publicity, TJ serves on the Recruitment Committee. Outside the fraternity, TJ works as a Campus Tour Guide and Student Admissions Representative and a web-technician for the Center for Student Business. He was a member of the UMass Drumline for four seasons and on the drumline’s teaching staff for one season. TJ played on the Club Lacrosse Team and has been a Co-Manager at Sweets & More Snack Bar in Orchard Hill.

Jerome Rogich served as Historian for the Executive Council of the Theta-Mu Chapter and was the first cyclist to complete the Journey of Hope in 2007. He graduated Cum Laude from the Commonwealth College at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. During his time as an undergraduate he was recognized for his research as well as his service to others with the a Commonwealth College Honors Research Grant, Brother of the Year Award, Commonwealth Essay in Community Service Award, and Community Service of the Year by and Individual Award. He is currently continuing his education at UMass by pursuing a M.S. degree in Structural Biology while also serving as an Assistant Residence Director for the Patterson and MacKimmie dormitories. He hopes that he can serve as a resource to younger brothers through his continued presence on campus, while also reaching his career goals. Jerome plans to attend either Medical School or a doctorate program focusing on Molecular Biophysics, and begin a career as a clinical researcher and professor.

Christopher graduated Cum Laude in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science, from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Throughout college, Christopher worked as a Resident Assistant in Washington Tower, as well as volunteering his time at Berkshire Hills Music Academy through the BOLTWOOD Project, as well as volunteering there on his own time. Upon graduation, Christopher worked for New England Biolabs briefly as a technical writer, and he is currently working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as a Lab Technician for Ann Graybiel, in the Brain and Cognitive sciences department. For the future, Christopher would like to pursue a masters degree in a biochemistry related field, and hopes to eventually work for the science industry.

Matt graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2006, with a degree in Japanese Language and Literature. As a recipient of a Japanese Ministry of Education scholarship, Matt spent his junior year studying at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. While on campus, Matt was a member of the Thatcher-Lewis-Johnson House Council, a Community Leader, a Resident Assistant in Lewis Hall, and a peer tutor, teaching Japanese at the Learning Resource Center. Matt is the second PiKapp in his family. His brother, Joshua, is a graduate of the Alpha Tau chapter at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Joe graduated Cum Laude in 2006 earning dual degrees in Communication and English. As an undergraduate, he was a member of the UMass Minuteman Marching Band, a columnist for the Daily Collegian, a Resident Assistant and spent two summers working with incoming freshmen through the New Students Program. In 2006, he interned at the Cannes Film Festival in France and was awarded the Michael S. Roif Award in Film Studies. Joe currently works as an Advancement Associate at Museum of Science in Boston and as a drill/music instructor for the Oakmont-Overlook High School Marching Band. Off campus, Val worked as an intern at Western Massachusetts Legal Services, an intern for Judge Carhart at Hampden Superior Court, and as an IT technician for Wizard Computer Services. Val’s future plans are to pursue a career as a legal assistant or paralegal for several years and eventually attend Law School.

Jared has also recently begun serving on the Push America Committee which is currently organizing the 2nd Annual Eric’s 5K Road Race. Outside the fraternity, he is a member of Commonwealth College and a volunteer for the outpatient rehabilitation clinic at the Amherst site of Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Brian pioneered the first New Member Retreat. He served as the New Member and Brotherhood chair positions. Brian graduated UMass in 2009 with a degree in Middle Eastern Studies. He reads, writes, and speaks Arabic on an intermediate level. Brother Gilb was commissioned as an officer for the United States Marine Corps on May 30th, 2009. He plans to get a military operation specialty in Logistics or Linguistics. Brian also plans to attend the American University in Cairo, Egypt to receive his language certificate after his service with the Marines has concluded.

Originally from Sweden, Eric has lived and studied in London, England as well as San Diego, California where he was enrolled at college before transferring to UMass in the fall of 2005. Eric is currently serving as the Push America Executive and has held this position since the fall of 2006. Outside of the fraternity, Eric is the co-president of the Undergraduate Economics Club and has also written for the department’s economics journal and has won the annual spring economics debate in the spring of 2006. He serves as a Resident Assistant in Lewis Hall, the international residence hall. Eric has also played on the men’s intramural hockey team.

He has interned with the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Jackals minor league baseball team. Matt is currently preparing for the LSATs and plans to attend law school in New York City after graduation.

Besides being involved in the fraternity, he has participated in the Arsenic Research project and is planning on doing research at the collegiate level this summer.

Rob currently serves as the president of the fraternity. He has previously served as Chaplain, Chief Justice, Risk Management Chair, and the IFC representative of the fraternity as well. Other extracurricular activities include serving as Treasurer of Southwest Area Government, IFC Vice President of Finances, and House Council president for the John Adams cluster. In regards to academics, his majors are political science and philosophy and he is pursuing the International Relations and Public Policy and Administration certificates. For work, he currently serves as a resident assistant in Pierpont Hall. Josh, or “Quack” as he’s known, is in the process of writing his own historical fiction theater production through the UMass Theater Guild, and will not stop there. He plans on writing several plays throughout the semester, with the possibility of publishing at least one of them. He was recently a background extra in an upcoming movie, and is acting in a local production called Raised In Captivity in early May.

David joined Pi Kappa Phi in Spring 2007 and served as Vice President of the Beta class. He served as the first finance and fund-raising chairman in Fall 2007. He then became appointed the Treasurer in Fall 2007, and served until Fall 2008. He was voted Brother of the Year in Fall 2008. David worked his first job in the Commercial Lines Corporate Finance Department at Travelers Insurance. He is currently working for The Hanover Insurance Group in their Future Leaders Program in Worcester MA. He is pursuing a CPCU and BA certifications. Looking into the future, David would like to obtain a MBA at UMass Amherst.

Karthik is a member of Commonwealth College. He currently serves as House Council President of Brett/Brooks cluster, co-secretary the UMass Jiu-jitsu Club, and is a member of the UMass Shotokan Club. Karthik is a musician. He has been playing the Indian string instrument, the Veena, for the past twelve years and has delivered numerous public performances. Karthik aspires to become a doctor and open his own practice.

Chris is an enthusiastic member of PiKapp’s intramural teams, including flag football, basketball, and softball. He currently serves as the 2008 UDance Co-Chair, planning the Greek Life event that will take place this fall. Chris serves on the Push America and Rituals Committees, and he coordinates the PiKapp/Smith College Date Auction, which takes place each spring. Chris spends his summers refereeing youth basketball and working for a contractor in his hometown.

Mike graduated from the University in May of 2009. As a student he has served as principal trumpet in the UMass Wind Ensemble and lead trumpet in Jazz Ensemble 1 in addition to his role as section leader and Student Director of the 400 member Minuteman Marching Band. In the fraternity Mike worked as the Push America Chairman coordinating the chapter’s first partnership with the Special Olympics of Western Massachusetts. In 2009, he became the fifth member of Theta Mu to cycle cross-country in Push America’s Journey of Hope. This event raises over $500,000 annually for organizations which support members of the community with a disability. Currently Mike works in the public schools in Quincy, MA teaching instrumental music. He is active as a trumpet player in the Boston area and performs with the Metropolitan Wind Symphony.

He commits his academics to awareness and activism and is receiving practicum credit as a Massachusetts State-Certified Rape Crisis Counselor at the Everywoman’s Center. Matt previously attended Boston University and the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he participated in a student-run organization for transgendered people and their allies. His aspirations change day-to-day, but he always succeeds at what he does.
